Distance and travel-time estimates may vary based on route selection, traffic, road conditions, and mapping data. Fuel costs are estimates based on the MPG and fuel price you entered.

What Counts as a Long-Distance Move?

Moving companies and industry sources generally group moves into a few broad distance bands. These categories aren’t an official legal standard — they’re a practical way to think about how much extra planning your move will need.

    Local Move

    Under 50 miles

Usually completed within a single day, often with hourly-rate labor.

    Short-Distance Move

    50–250 miles

Typically a day trip, but may need an early start and a full tank of gas.

    Long-Distance Move

    250–500 miles

Often requires more fuel planning and a firm arrival-time window.

    Cross-Country Move

    500+ miles

Usually needs overnight stops, multi-day scheduling, and more detailed budgeting.

    How Is Moving Distance Calculated?

Driving distance is the distance a vehicle actually travels along available roads — highways, exits, and connecting routes — to get from one location to another. It’s almost always longer than a direct line between two points.

Straight-line distance (also called “as the crow flies”) is the shortest geographic distance between two coordinates, ignoring roads entirely.

This calculator requests a live driving route from Mapbox’s routing service, using each city’s coordinates as the origin and destination, and returns the actual road distance and duration for that route. If the routing service is unavailable, it falls back to an estimate — straight-line distance adjusted by a typical road-distance factor — and clearly labels the result as an estimate rather than a live route.

    How the Calculator Works

    Fuel Used
Fuel Used = Total Distance ÷ Vehicle MPG
    Fuel Cost
Fuel Cost = Fuel Used × Fuel Price
    Round-Trip Distance
    Round-Trip Distance = One-Way Distance × 2
    Multiple Trips
    Total Distance = One-Way Distance × Trips

What Does Your Moving Distance Mean for Moving Costs?

Distance is just one factor in your overall moving budget. Movers and rental companies also weigh: home size, number of belongings, labor hours, truck size, moving date, packing services, storage needs, insurance/valuation coverage, accessibility at both addresses, fuel, and tolls.
