How Long Will Your Move Take? DIY vs Professional Movers
This compares estimated wall-clock time only — it doesn’t reflect cost differences. Professionals aren’t always faster; it depends on crew size and experience.
Moving-time estimates are planning estimates, not guarantees. Actual time can vary because of traffic, route conditions, weather, loading efficiency, accessibility, and the amount of belongings.
How Long Does Moving Take?
Total moving time is driven by a combination of factors: how much you own, how many people are helping, how accessible both homes are, how far you’re driving, and how much of your packing is already done. A studio apartment move might take half a day; a 4-bedroom cross-country move can take several days once you include packing, loading, driving, and unloading.
The biggest levers are home size and belongings (more stuff means more packing and loading time), number of movers (more hands roughly divides loading/unloading time, with diminishing returns past 4–5 people), accessibility (stairs, elevators, and walking distance all add time), and driving distance (which should always include a buffer for traffic, stops, and road conditions rather than a bare distance-over-speed number).
Moving Time by Home Size
These are general planning ranges assuming average belongings and 2–3 movers — your actual time will vary.
| Home Size | Typical Packing Time | Loading | Unloading | Move Complexity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Studio | 1–3 hr | 1–2 hr | 1–1.5 hr | Low |
| 1 Bedroom | 2–5 hr | 1.5–3 hr | 1–2 hr | Low–Moderate |
| 2 Bedrooms | 4–8 hr | 2.5–4.5 hr | 2–3.5 hr | Moderate |
| 3 Bedrooms | 6–12 hr | 3.5–6 hr | 2.5–4.5 hr | Moderate–High |
| 4 Bedrooms | 9–16 hr | 4.5–7.5 hr | 3.5–6 hr | High |
| 5+ Bedrooms | 12–20+ hr | 5.5–9 hr | 4–7 hr | Very High |
Moving Time by Distance
These driving-time examples assume a 55 mph average speed with a 15% route buffer — actual driving time depends on your route, traffic, weather, and how often you stop.

How the Calculator Works
Driving time = distance ÷ average speed, adjusted by a traffic multiplier and your route buffer percentage.
Loading & unloading time use a home-size baseline, then adjust for your number of movers, loading difficulty, stairs, elevator access, walking distance, and any heavy items you’ve flagged.
Packing time starts from a home-size baseline, reduced by the percentage you’ve already packed, and adjusted by your packing style and who’s doing the packing.
Total time combines packing, loading, driving (including any extra trips), breaks, and unloading.
Example Calculation
Example only — actual results vary.
| Distance | 300 miles |
| Average speed | 55 mph |
| Home size | 2 bedrooms |
| Movers | 3 |
| Trips | 1 |
| Estimated driving time | ~6.3 hr (with 15% buffer) |
| Estimated loading time | ~2 hr |
| Estimated unloading time | ~1.5 hr |
| Estimated total moving time | ~11–13 hr |
